Chris Dayton, Executive Manager Performance & Reward at Transfield Services (Australia) Pty. Limited incorporated the Remunerate software into Transfield Services Australian Incentive Review process. He discussed the reasons behind this decision and the outcomes for Transfield Services.

What were the main reasons behind implementing Remunerate?

Initially we used Remunerate for the Australian Base Salary Review in May/June 2008, which was very successful. Our main driver to use Remunerate for the Australian Incentive Review was to allow the Business units to be able to use the one platform to do everything associated with the Incentive Review.

We wanted to be able to set individual KPIs, use the system to calculate payments and produce personalised letters for each individual in the beginning and at the end of the Incentive Review cycle.

Due to the nature of our business there is frequent movement of staff between Business Units so in the past it was possible to miss staff in the employee reviews or worse still staff receiving conflicting payment letters from different Business Units.

Another influencing factor was that in Remunerate we were able to set up a very flexible review format that allowed Business Units to have complete flexibility in setting varying KPI for individuals instead of allowing only a handful of generic KPIs to choose from.

What are the key benefits you have gained from using Remunerate?

This saves a lot of duplication and double entry of data. In the past Business Unit Heads would enter KPIs for individuals in their groups on a spreadsheet. Business Units would then have to wait until they received the Corporate Incentive Letter template and finally the data in the KPI spreadsheet would be used to generate the letter for the individual.

Now the individuals' KPIs, the Letter Templates and the employee data are all loaded into Remunerate. All a manager needs to do in the beginning of the Review period is fill in the KPIs and target percentages for each individual and Remunerate generates the letters along with their individual KPI statement. At the end of the Incentive period, after the Business Unit Heads enter the individuals' actual performance and incentive payment, Remunerate generates the Incentive Review letters for the individuals.

By using Remunerate it is not possible to duplicate payments or omit staff from the review.

Could you list any tangible benefits that Remunerate has provided for Transfield Services?

Remunerate has saved Transfield Services a lot of time and resources. In the past senior management and support staff spent a considerable amount of time getting all the associated documentation that accompanied Incentive Letters out to individuals both at the start of the Incentive period and again when Incentive payments were made.

This has now all been automated and saves a lot of time and this can equate to substantial financial savings.

Now the individuals' KPIs, the Letter Templates and the employee data are all loaded into Remunerate. Are you planning to use Remunerate in the future?

Yes. Currently Transfield Services does not have any HRIS system that could assist us with salary reviews or equity reviews in the way that Remunerate does. I do not know of any HRIS system that will be able to replicate the things that Remunerate does for Salary and Incentive Reviews.
